The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a 1958 biographical war drama film directed by Mark Robson, and starring Ingrid Bergman, Curt Jürgens, and Robert Donat in his final film role. It is loosely based on the life of Gladys Aylward (Bergman), a British woman who became a missionary in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War, who became known as a protector of war orphans. The screenplay was adapted from Alan Burgess' 1957 biography of Aylward, The Small Woman. The film was released by 20th Century Fox on 23 November 1958 to generally positive reviews and commercial success, though Aylward herself was highly critical of the film's inaccuracies. Robson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. At the 12th British Academy Film Awards, The Inn of the Sixth Happiness received nominations Best Foreign Actor (Jürgens), Best Foreign Actress (Bergman), and Best British Screenplay (Isobel Lennart). The film also won a Special Golden Globe for "Best Film Promoting International Understanding."
