Through the education on the proper Korean language, individuals can learn about communication to eventually form one big society. By introducing elementary textbooks from the independence of Korea to today, this exhibition shows how the Korean people have cultivated the sense of “we” and the dream of living as one community.

The exhibition consists of two parts that present how an individual establishes the sense of self-identity, develops the sense of “we,” and eventually becomes a member of a community. The first part of the exhibition—Starting as “You and I”—illustrates textbooks in Korea that educate individuals about small societies and relationships surrounding “me.” The second part of the exhibition—Becoming “We”—presents the bigger pictures of “we” that form one generation and display textbooks that introduce various forms of communication.

By examining elementary textbooks, we can find the way of building the enlightened and harmonious community together.

Part I : Starting as “You and I”

Starting as “You and I”
“You” and “I” constitute “us.” An individual starts forming relationships with people surrounding oneself by first establishing the self-identity and understanding others. An individual experiences and learns the first community life in elementary school by studying proper etiquettes, rules, and communication skills essential for fundamental social units such as “you and I,” family, and companions in school. Please observe elementary textbooks that present small, fundamental social relationships that start as “you and I.”
▲ Korean Language textbook, Baduki and Cheol-su (1948)Baduki and Cheol-su is the first Korean language textbook published by the Ministry of Education after the establishment of the Korean government in 1948.▲ Combiner of consonants and vowels, Joseon-eo Chuljagi (1936)Joseon-eo Chuljagi was invented by Choi Yoon-sun for helping children to learn Korean language.
